Hello Ivan, tell us a little bit more about yourself. Who are you, where are you from and which club are you member of?

My name is Ivan Bertels. I’m 44 years old and I was born in Geel (also Thomas Pieters’ birthplace). I’m currently living in ’s Gravenwezel, which is less than 5 minutes away from Rinkven GC. I’m a member of Brasschaat OG & CC, the most beautiful and nicest 9 holes golf course in Flanders.

What do you do in your day-to-day life?

I work as an IT project lead at Zetes, a Belgian listed company with operations in Europe and Africa. It’s been part of Panasonic for a short while now.

For how long have you been playing golf and what’s your current handicap?

I’ve been playing golf for 6 years now and my current handicap is 13.6.

What do you like most about golf?

The social aspect; being together with friends, but it’s mainly the technical aspect that makes the sport so much fun. Of course, the feeling you get when you’re doing sports, is important, too.

Being able to improve every time is a big challenge as well. Golf becomes real fun when you’re able to enjoy it.

What is your most beautiful golf experience or course that you played at?

My most beautiful golf experiences were in Spain and Portugal. La Quinta do Lago, Marbella Golf Club, really impressed me. But Belgium has many beautiful golf courses, too!

Another great experience is playing golf after sunrise…

How did you end up with BKO and why did you want to cooperate?

When the event was announced, I didn’t hesitate for a moment to apply as a volunteer. Because of my interest in other tournaments, this seemed like a unique opportunity to participate.

Who is your favourite player and why?

Without a doubt; ‘Lefty’ Phil Mickelson! His short game, course management and because I’m a left-handed player myself 😉

Also, our 3 Belgian “bombers” Thomas Pieters, Thomas Detry and Nicolas Colsaerts – being a small country, we can definitely be proud of them!

What are you looking forward to the most during the event?

The ambience, the peaceful feeling of the players, but I also think the interaction between player and caddy is interesting. I’m hoping to see some international top players in action.

What makes BKO unique, according to you?

Definitely the concept… The format that makes it unique -a mix of strokeplay and matchplay.

Why should everybody go to BKO?

Everybody who loves golf should come to this event. It’s a unique chance to welcome the Belgian Open again, after 18 years.

But, more importantly, to support our Belgian top players!

The organization for volunteers for the Belgian Knockout is organized and coordinated by Golf Vlaanderen, in close liaison with Rinkven International Golf Club & PietersProductions. Besides the organization for volunteers, Golf Vlaanderen will commit to the promotion of the Belgian Knockout, to enthuse as many non-golfers as possible, for golf and the event.
